At the sixth annual International Preservation Trades Workshop, Robert Young, a masonry restoration specialist, was amazed by the level and variety of artisan skills presented at the event. He noted that the best people in the country and, in some cases, the world were presenting, representing many centuries of hard won experience and tradition. How do you prefer to learn, he asks, the hard way or by coming here and seeing how these guys do it? It's your choice. Robert was himself presenting techniques for in situ terra cotta restoration. He picked up two consultation projects from connections he made during the sessions, but that is not what will keep him coming back to future events. Knowledge, he says, is power, in the trades like anywhere else.
